Vectis is a
Rugby Football club for Mini and Junior players across the Island.
We are responsible for teams from Under 7 through to Under 18’s.
The club, formed from many smaller clubs, is committed to providing
the Isle of Wight youth with the full experience of Rugby Union
Football. This involves training at our three host grounds as
well as participating in matches and festivals on the mainland
where we meet many other clubs and at our own festival which
hosts clubs not just from the south of England but as far away
as Wales and Guernsey.
We are a member
of the Hampshire RFU and as such follow all their codes of conduct
but we also have own codes of conduct which are:
PARENTS
AND SPECTATORS
1. Foster enthusiastic participation.
Do not force an unwilling child to participate in Rugby.
2. Educate your Child always to play by the Laws of the game.
3. Instill in Children an understanding and enjoyment of the
value of training.
4. Acknowledge the value and importance of volunteer coaches
and referees. They give freely of their time and resources to
provide Rugby for children.
5. Emphasise respect for referees by not publicly questioning
the referee’s honesty or decision-making.
6. Encourage a child who has made a mistake during a game. Never
ridicule.
7. Applaud good play by your team and by members of the opposing
team. Children learn best by example.
8. Teach Children that honest effort is as important as victory
so that defeat is accepted without undue disappointment.
9. Condemn bad behaviour and bad language, via the coach.
10. Try not to shout continually and “at” children.
Shout occasionally and for them.
11. It’s only a game!!!.
12. Don’t try and coach from the sidelines, the children
already have a coach.
13. At away fixtures, remember you are representing the club.
14. Failure to comply with the above codes could result in your
child/children’s withdrawal or suspension from the club.
PLAYERS
1. Participate for the “fun”
of it, not just to please your parents or coach
2. Play by the Laws of the game.
3. Accept all the referees decisions
4. Control your temper. You and your team will benefit.
5. Keep trying even when it seems hopeless.
6. Be a good sport. Recognise all good play whether by your
team or by your opponents team.
7. Treat all players, as you would like to be treated. Don’t
interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of any player.
8. Remember, as well as enjoyment, the aims of the game are
to improve your skills and to feel good. Do not be a show off.
9. Cooperate with your coach, referee, team-mates and opponents,
for without them you don’t have a game.
10. Encourage each other instead of criticizing.
11. Listen to and respect your coaches. They are there to help
you.
12. Be a good winner as well as a good loser. Don’t crow
and don’t cry.
13. Failure to comply with the above codes could result in your
withdrawal or suspension.
COACHES
1. Be reasonable in your demands
on the young players time, energy and enthusiasm. Remember that
they have other interests.
2. Teach your players that the laws of the game should not be
broken and the spirit of the game should always be upheld.
3. Avoid over-playing the talented players. All players need
and deserve equal time.
4. Remember that children play for fun and enjoyment and that
winning is only part of it.
5. Never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes
or losing a competition.
6. Ensure that equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate
to the age and ability of the players.
7. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents and for
the judgment of officials and opposing coaches.
8. Arrive at training sessions and games on time and if not
able to do so make alternative arrangements.
9. Gain respect by being generous with your praise and set a
good example in every way.
10. Improve your players through coaching. Frequent match play
or long training sessions do not guarantee development.
11. Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed on
sound coaching principles and principles of growth and development
of children.
REFEREES
1. Behave and dress at all times
in a manner becoming to your responsibility.
2. Know the laws and regulations and apply them to the match
skill level of the players.
3. Seek to control the game with enjoyment rather then domination.
4. Play advantage whenever possible in order to let the game
flow.
5. Ensure you are fit enough to keep up with play.
6. Explain your decisions. Be consistent, objective and courteous.
7. Penalize deliberate foul play as being un-sportsmanlike.
8. Compliment players on good play whenever praise is deserved.
Always compliment both teams at the end of the match.
9. Keep yourself informed of all law changes affecting mini
rugby.
10. Join your county referees society and become a qualified
referee. The more refereeing you do the easier it is to cope.
