SEACLOSE Park was bathed in sunshine for the hundreds of children taking part in Vectis RFC’s annual Easter Festival. And the Island club acquitted themselves very well against some top clubs from around the country.

In all, almost 100 teams from 22 clubs took part in the festival, which covered under-sevens and under-eights tag rugby all the way up to full contact under-12s.

All the competitions were held in round robins, with the top two teams from each group going into the main cup competition, third and fourth-placed teams going into the plate tournament, and fifth-placed teams going into the consolation bowl tournament.

In the two tag tournaments, Vectis won the bowl, while the two under-nines teams both reached the semi-finals of the plate.

The under-tens had the biggest success, winning the plate competition with ease.

The side had narrowly missed out on the main competition and showed how strong they were by beating Wanstead 6-0 in the quarter-finals, Beckenham 4-0 in the semi-final, and Dorking 3-0 in the final.

The team’s top-scorer was Luke Margham but coach Nigel Malkin said the likes of Max Hill, Louis Malkin, Alfie Foster and Matthew Brading shone for the side.

Though the under-11s failed to win anything, the under-12s reached the semi-final of the plate.

Dave Norman, organiser, thanked Jerry Birch, of Trant, as well as Speedy Hire, JMC Hire and Westridge Skips for helping make the event possible, and added: “It was an absolutely brilliant day, the feedback has been tremendous and I think someone above was smiling down on us with the weather.”

!! Vectis Festival Cancelled !!

By Site Admin

As I’m sure you all now know the Festival has been cancelled. It is the first time in it’s history and lets hope it’s the last. Apologies to all those who turned up and comisserations to all the teams that tried to cross to the island and couldn’t. Volunteers roughed the atrocious weather to set up the event but all teams and coaches felt that conditions were impossible for children to compete and enjoy what is usually an excellent days rugby. The club would like to thank all those who made the effort to take part and volunteers who set up and then had to pack it all away.
