U12’s Midhurst mud bath
By U12 coach
On an extremely wet Sunday morning, the U12’s braved the turbulent seas for their second fixture of the season. Travelling to Midhurst - and in true Vectis style, getting lost on the way – they arrived at the club, and after a brisk warm-up in adverse weather conditions the boys were ready to play.
Vectis 5 – 0 Hayward’s Heath
First up, they faced Hayward’s Heath – the other visiting team. The game seemed to go quickly, and the lads demonstrated strong passing and spacial awareness. These two factors were something that the coaches had been working hard on in recent weeks. There were several penalties given to both sides during the game due mainly to the conditions. Late in the second half, Fred Boyce broke through the defence and offloaded the ball to Evan Toms who scored a try in the right hand corner.
Vectis 20 – 0 Midhurst
After a short break, and a change of shirt, Vectis then faced the hosts, Midhurst. By this time, the rain was horizontal but the team was revved up and this showed in the performance – communication was excellent, particularly between the scrum and fly halves, and support play improved as the game continued. Tries were rife in this game: James Stirling scored the first, after being pushed over by the forwards; Fred Boyce scored two fantastic tries in quick succession following some excellent work at the rucks from the team; Linton Cider then scored from a penalty awarded close to the opposition try line. Vectis defence was once again outstanding with another clean sheet.
Wessex fire backs man of the match: Evan Toms.
Wightlink forwards man of the match: Harry Hopper.
Team: Kearney, Boyce, Cider, Leaver, Mc Padden, Sterling, Vaughan, Rackett, Moore (C), Doyle, Hopper, Blair, Toms, Hall, Chatfield, Wain, Ayling.
