Successful year celebrated at midsummer get-together - U15
By Site Admin

Image - Award winners at the 2011 AGM and BBQ
This year’s successes were marked by the usual midsummer BBQ at Ventnor Rugby Club. There were major successes in virtually all age groups. Colts became Hampshire Division 2 winners, U15s and U14s are Hampshire Division 3 winners, U13s got through to the semis of the Hampshire Cup, U10s were plate winners at the Vectis Festival, U9s got to the final in the Hants Tournament, and the U8s and U7s won the bowl at the Vectis festival. An excellent year for one of the smallest catchments in the South.
This year’s event also marked the changing of some key roles in the club with some of the ‘old guard’ stepping down to be replaced by some new faces. After two solid years as Chair, and too many years to mention as a key member of the club, Chris Marsh is stepping down. The club extends its thanks to him for his time and extensive efforts in helping it become what it is today. Replacing him will be a new face on the committee in the shape of Clive Greedy.
Nigel Malkin will be stepping into the role of Coaching Coordinator replacing another long standing key member of Vectis, Ollie Kearney, again another long-standing member of the committee who has helped the club tirelessly over many years. Ollie - good luck form all of use and thank you for your efforts.
In an attempt to get all age groups involved with the running of the club Ivan Franklin, from the U10s, has stepped forward as Fixtures Secretary. Whilst Festival Coordinator will be retained by Dave Norman (after his cool and successful approach to its management over the last two years) he will be shadowed and helped by U11 volunteers who will take over from him the following season. They will then be shadowed by the year below them the following year to start a rotating responsibility through all age groups.
More fresh faces to the committee are Tesni Challis (taking up the position of Club Secretary) and Sue Montgomery (Child Protection Officer) - welcome aboard!
Old lag Pete Schindler has taken up the role of Treasurer replacing yet another old lag Ian Gregory - again who has been with the club many years. Cheers Ian, it’s been a pleasure - thank you.
The only position left vacant is the Minis Transport Secretary - a volunteer from the U8s or U9s would be most welcome!
Here’s to the new season! Welcome and good luck!

Vectis wins RFU seal of approval
By Site Admin

Vectis has been awarded the RFU’s Mini and Youth Seal of Approval accreditation for the standard of its provision of rugby for young players.
The RFU introduced the Seal of Approval programme in association with Sport England and the Clubmark scheme in 2002 to recognise clubs in reaching standards required in the development of rugby for young people and to plan for the long term sustainability of the club.
Clubs are assessed by the RFU and must demonstrate evidence of good practice in areas such as club management, player development, child protection, sports equity and coaching, refereeing and volunteering.
The club has worked closely with Jamie Sanders their Rugby Development Officer whose primary role is to support clubs in developing the provision for players.
The RFU’s Community Rugby director Andrew Scoular said: “This accreditation will show all those with an interest in rugby and sports development that Vectis Rugby Club is providing its young people with a safe, well-organised and enjoyable environment in which to learn and play rugby.”
The Club would like to thank Roisin Mortell and George Nightingale for their dedication in getting the club this prestigious seal of approval.

Match report Vs Fawley
By U15 coach
Vectis 74 Fawley 0
Vectis rounded off their League campaign with an emphatic victory at home against Fawley. Dominating from the start and with powerful running from forwards Toby Wilcock, Paddy Webb and Matt Church, Vectis started to put points on the board within the first five minutes with winger Tom Turtle scoring between the posts. This was soon followed by a sublime try from Centre Jasper Wagen who showed some electric footwork to outfox the Fawley defence. From the restart Kemp Price returned the ball for Vectis’s third try and this was quickly followed by a further try from Jasper Wagen. Scrum half Lewis Coulter added a further two tries before half time although credit was due to prop Toby Moffatt who made all the running for one of these. With Joe Jackson on ultra accurate form five conversions were added to these six tries and Vectis turned around at half time 40-0 to the good. In the second half all the substitutes were played and credit was due particularly to Alex Hill who stepped into scrum half and showed some great passing to set the backs up. Second row Matt Church started the second half scoring with a well taken try again converted by Joe Jackson, this was followed up by prop Cameron Lyons who cleverly took advantage of a hole in the Fawley defence. With Fawley conceeding defeat at 52-0 to Vectis the matched continued in a friendly format and Tom Turtle’s turn of pace proved too much for the now exhausted Fawley side and he added his second and third tries of the game with Joe Jackson adding yet another conversion. Cameron Lyons added another try and in the dying seconds of the game Lewis Coulter took the ball 60 yards on a solo run to score his third of the day.
With a final tally of 74-0 Vectis confirmed their status as unbeaten League 3 Champions for the season.
Credit was due to all the boys today in particular the subs Alex Hill, Ryan Tulloch, Willis Bunday, Caeden Cattell, Callum MIddleton and Jack Salero every one of which came on in the second half and kept up not only the scoring but the overall quality of the play. In every way this was a real team effort today and collectively Vectis ended the day as Champions.
Forward of the match went to No 8 Toby Wilcock for his powerful running play.
Back of the day went to Centre Jasper Wagen for his electric running from start to finish
Man of the Match went to Captain Kemp Price for his 100% commitment and leadership throughout.
Both of the coaches commented that any of the 21 man squad could have picked up these awards today and it was their toughest game of the season to have selected from.
Vectis: Moffatt, Brown, Lyons, Church, Biss, Webb, Cant, Wilcock, Coulter, Jackson, Wall, Price (C), Wagen, Turtle, Wilson. Subs: Tulloch, Cattell, Bunday, Salero, Hill, Middleton.

here’s a copy of the Fawley website write up of the match:
We were going so well
The lads played well against a massive Vectis side who deserved the Div 3 champs spot. It was a bit like trying to slow a speeding train.
This was a big loss and a big disappointment for the players as much as anyone but the Vectis team were BIG, FAST and too much of a handful for Fawley. There was nothing more we could do. All the Fawley lads were there for the best turnout of the season and the last League game. But as much as we were up for it, Vectis were too, as they wanted this win to take the Div 3 cup, after going unbeaten in the league and only conceding 35 points.
Many parents and family were with 14 out of the 18 Fawley U15 players and already on the Island on a short ‘tour’ and the other 4 players plus parents, joined us on the Sunday morning. The Tour fun was not the cause of the loss as all the lads were very well behaved and looked after themselves the day and night before. This was still a great weekend and I wish now we had done something the year before when they were 14. Having said that it was hard work organising and maintaining the pace in readiness for a league match. Next year we will head westwards in a coach and play a Saturday and a Sunday ‘friendly’.
Back to the match, Andy and Deano were well up for this one, as were the others. Did they ‘believe’, I think they did, but right from the whistle Vectis were like a steam roller. Fawley kept them out for 10 minutes or so and then it was one way traffic. Although at 4 tries up, Fawley had the Vectis players thinking and their supporters keen to drive the win home. Or kill us, not sure which.
chris Wilson at 15 was immense in defence once again, as was Rob Thomas on the blitz but unfortunately with two good chances only just knocked on, we were unable to move off zero.
Another lesson in defence on a hard sloping pitch but the result was fair. Looking at the team sheet most Vectis Players were born in 1995, Fawley have most born in 1996 and nearly 9 months younger, and that’s how it goes.
Here is the league and how we got on. There is always next season, onwards and upwards.
Match report vs New Milton
By U15 coach
VECTIS (U15) 19 NEW MILTON (U15) 10
Vectis faced League 1 opposition New Milton in a friendly match played at the Hurricanes ground. New Milton took an early lead after some quick passing movements put their winger away into the corner. Vectis immedietly replied with a break away try from Kemp Price and Joe Jackson converted to put the islanders into the lead at half time. Dominating the scrum and tackling hard Vectis contained the New Milton forwards well, New Milton started to probe Vectis with a good kicking game however with safe hands in the form of Jack Wilson at full back Vectis soon got a much deserved second try scored by Jasper Wagen and again converted by Joe Jackson. Despite New Milton scoring another try in the second half Vectis continued to dominate physically and a final try from Kemp Price towards the end of the game killed off any hope of a New Milton comeback. In tough weather conditions and against tough opposition Vectis showed their passion and determination throughout and every member of the squad had a part to play as all the subs were used and deserved merit.
Vectis: Moffat, Cattell, Lyons, Wilcock, Biss, Cant, Price, Webb, Coulter, Jackson, Medland, Wagen, Kasemsubphaisam, Wall, Wilson.
Subs: Church, Salero, Lilly, Bunday, Middleton, Brown, Tulloch
Match report vs Trojans
By U15 coach
Trojans 28 - Vectis 5
After beating Trojans in the corresponding fixture last year by more than 50 points and after the last match against Gosport it was with a certain degree of confidence that we travelled over to Trojans for a friendly match.
Getting off to their now famous slow start! Vectis were soon 5 - 0 down to a Trojans side who although smaller in stature more than made up for it with determination and passion in every position. Lots of technical mistakes let Trojans enjoy a far higher percentage of possession than Vectis would normally allow and it was no surprise when Trojans extended their lead with a penalty and shortly afterwards another try to go into half time 13-0 up. With a rousing half time talk there was still hope that if they pulled their act together and performed as they have in other fixtures Vectis could claw back this deficit and get themselves back in the game. In the early stages of the second half it looked as if they may do just that, a rolling maul from the halfway to the 5m line showed the strength Vectis are known for but a basic handling error saw the opportunity come to nothing and this in a way pretty much summed up Vectis’s day. At times Vectis appeared to be waking up only for a basic mistake to give posession straight back to Trojans. In the last breath of the game Joe Jackson intercepted a pass from the Trojans forwards and ran home to score and save at least some of Vectis’s blushes. Whilst overall it was fair to say that it was a disappointing performance throughout the team given recent performances and results it would not be fair to take away from an extremley well drilled and organised Trojans team who made very few mistakes and kept their eye on the prize throughout. We were very grateful for Trojans hospitality and they are a very sporting and friendly club whom we hope to enjoy many fixtures with in the future. Vectis now need to quickly pull themselves back together in time for next weeks League clash against Guernsey. COME ON VECTIS!!!!!
