Match report Vs Fawley

By U15 coach

Vectis 74 Fawley 0

Vectis rounded off their League campaign with an emphatic victory at home against Fawley. Dominating from the start and with powerful running from forwards Toby Wilcock, Paddy Webb and Matt Church, Vectis started to put points on the board within the first five minutes with winger Tom Turtle scoring between the posts. This was soon followed by a sublime try from Centre Jasper Wagen who showed some electric footwork to outfox the Fawley defence. From the restart Kemp Price returned the ball for Vectis’s third try and this was quickly followed by a further try from Jasper Wagen. Scrum half Lewis Coulter added a further two tries before half time although credit was due to prop Toby Moffatt who made all the running for one of these. With Joe Jackson on ultra accurate form five conversions were added to these six tries and Vectis turned around at half time 40-0 to the good. In the second half all the substitutes were played and credit was due particularly to Alex Hill who stepped into scrum half and showed some great passing to set the backs up. Second row Matt Church started the second half scoring with a well taken try again converted by Joe Jackson, this was followed up by prop Cameron Lyons who cleverly took advantage of a hole in the Fawley defence. With Fawley conceeding defeat at 52-0 to Vectis the matched continued in a friendly format and Tom Turtle’s turn of pace proved too much for the now exhausted Fawley side and he added his second and third tries of the game with Joe Jackson adding yet another conversion. Cameron Lyons added another try and in the dying seconds of the game Lewis Coulter took the ball 60 yards on a solo run to score his third of the day.
With a final tally of 74-0 Vectis confirmed their status as unbeaten League 3 Champions for the season.
Credit was due to all the boys today in particular the subs Alex Hill, Ryan Tulloch, Willis Bunday, Caeden Cattell, Callum MIddleton and Jack Salero every one of which came on in the second half and kept up not only the scoring but the overall quality of the play. In every way this was a real team effort today and collectively Vectis ended the day as Champions.
Forward of the match went to No 8 Toby Wilcock for his powerful running play.
Back of the day went to Centre Jasper Wagen for his electric running from start to finish
Man of the Match went to Captain Kemp Price for his 100% commitment and leadership throughout.
Both of the coaches commented that any of the 21 man squad could have picked up these awards today and it was their toughest game of the season to have selected from.

Vectis: Moffatt, Brown, Lyons, Church, Biss, Webb, Cant, Wilcock, Coulter, Jackson, Wall, Price (C), Wagen, Turtle, Wilson. Subs: Tulloch, Cattell, Bunday, Salero, Hill, Middleton.

here’s a copy of the Fawley website write up of the match:

We were going so well
The lads played well against a massive Vectis side who deserved the Div 3 champs spot. It was a bit like trying to slow a speeding train.

This was a big loss and a big disappointment for the players as much as anyone but the Vectis team were BIG, FAST and too much of a handful for Fawley. There was nothing more we could do. All the Fawley lads were there for the best turnout of the season and the last League game. But as much as we were up for it, Vectis were too, as they wanted this win to take the Div 3 cup, after going unbeaten in the league and only conceding 35 points.

Many parents and family were with 14 out of the 18 Fawley U15 players and already on the Island on a short ‘tour’ and the other 4 players plus parents, joined us on the Sunday morning. The Tour fun was not the cause of the loss as all the lads were very well behaved and looked after themselves the day and night before. This was still a great weekend and I wish now we had done something the year before when they were 14. Having said that it was hard work organising and maintaining the pace in readiness for a league match. Next year we will head westwards in a coach and play a Saturday and a Sunday ‘friendly’.

Back to the match, Andy and Deano were well up for this one, as were the others. Did they ‘believe’, I think they did, but right from the whistle Vectis were like a steam roller. Fawley kept them out for 10 minutes or so and then it was one way traffic. Although at 4 tries up, Fawley had the Vectis players thinking and their supporters keen to drive the win home. Or kill us, not sure which.

chris Wilson at 15 was immense in defence once again, as was Rob Thomas on the blitz but unfortunately with two good chances only just knocked on, we were unable to move off zero.

Another lesson in defence on a hard sloping pitch but the result was fair. Looking at the team sheet most Vectis Players were born in 1995, Fawley have most born in 1996 and nearly 9 months younger, and that’s how it goes.

Here is the league and how we got on. There is always next season, onwards and upwards.
