Vectis Chairman’s Address
Thank you for attending this meeting, these are unusual times and although I often hear the phrase
‘back to normal’, I fear it may be sometime before Rugby returns to something like normal. On this
we wait for RFU guidance but please be assured that the Committee will move forward with plans to
be shared at a Coaches and Managers meeting soon.
The 2019-2020 season was a good one for Vectis RFC. Our membership remained steady with our
Junior teams (U14 and U15) having particularly good recruitment with teams regularly around the 30
mark. Both teams also enjoyed some success that should be applauded for not only the way they
conducted themselves on the pitch, but also their conduct off the pitch. The U15’s were Division 2
winners in the Hampshire League, a well-deserved result. Following close on their heels, the U14’s
had a confident season, only losing out in the final to Basingstoke. Maybe third time lucky next
The U13’s had a good season, after a slow start they had confident performances at a number of
fixtures and festivals. Their spirit and ability were reflected in the particularly good results at these
events, well done.
The Minis had good results across the board during the season, with teams finding their feet and
showing that Vectis RFC are to be counted. Well done to them all.
Vectis girl’s teams (U13-U18) continue to remain strong and recruit more players. It is a slower
process than we would ideally like, but it is progress and with their awesome attendance at festivals,
it has been an encouraging season for them. Well done!
It was unfortunate that the season came to an early end due to COVID-19 as I know that the U12’s
Round Robin was a disappointing loss to ourselves and our mainland fellow teams. Likewise, the
highly anticipated Dinner Dance. Next season COVID-19 permitting!
As Chairman of Vectis RFC, it has been my honour to serve with Rebecca (Hon Treasurer) and
Victoria (Our long serving CSO). It would be remiss of me not to thank them both for their dedication
and hard work that they have completed for Vectis. Rebecca has been instrumental in the dealings
with Raging Bull and Wightlink, and the club, and hence the players/ members, have benefitted
greatly from her endeavours. Victoria last escape attempt from Vectis was short lived when she
gamely stepped into the role again after the new role holder was unable to continue. To them both,
who are here with us today, I thank them whole heartedly and hope that they will remain part of the
Vectis family as supporters for some time yet to come.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers, coaches, managers and
supporters for their hard work without which, Vectis RFC would not exist. It often goes unseen and
therefore it should not go without mention. On behalf of all the players, I thank you.
Emma Douglass
Chairman Vectis RFC
