Vectis Rugby Club staged a mini adventure for their under 7/8s mini players at the Wootton Rec on Sunday (Feb 26th) in a six-way mini tournament for the highly coveted Golden IronMan Trophy. Each team had to pick their own scary team name and create their own Haka (rugby war dance) before they could start their matches.

After an epic five rounds of preliminary point scoring, 3 points for a try, 2 points for each turnover and 1 point for each completed pass, the Demons finished in top spot with 80 points, the Vectis Velociraptors were in second place with 77 points and the Terminators came in third with 73. In the Golden Spoon playoffs the Eagles played some terrific rugby to overcome determined attacking and defending from the Destroyers to pick up the Golden Spoon. The Destroyers didn't go home empty handed, they picked up a very tasty bag of chocolate chip cookies for their hard work!

In the semi-finals, the Terminators managed to overcome the Demons 15/9 to grab the first place in the finals - with the Velociraptors just managing to pip the Lightning Cones 18/17 in one the games of the tournament.

In the epic Golden IronMan Final we saw some excellent running rugby and accurate passing from both teams with the Terminators taking the initial lead but the turning point of the match came from a fantastic bounce-pass turnover from Billy E who raced through to finish the match with a stunning dive over the line to clinch the game at 29/20. What a game. What a tournament.

The Vectis Velociraptors ran-out the well-deserved winners but with lots of fun, laughs and epic tries from all the teams involved. Many thanks to all the parents helping out with scoring, time-keeping, cheering and running the maths challenges at the end of each round!

The under 7/8s mini rugby teams travel away with all the big boys (under 9s to under 12s) next week to take on Alton at Alton. And two weeks after that all the Vectis teams will be competing in the Hampshire Tournament. New players and returning players still warmly welcome to join the club for the warmer, more exciting end of the season which culminates with the UK's largest one-day Mini rugby festival, The Vectis Mini Rugby Festival at Seaclose Park, April 23rd 2017.
