Vectis Under 14s Victorious
For the second week on the bounce, a reduced squad travelled to the north island and returned with a win
Despite the inconvenience of a boat load of great south runners, the under 14s travelled to Portsmouth RFC with a squad of 15 who were keen to build on last weeks success.
The opposition opened the scoring after 2 minutes with a run away try which they then converted. This provided the necessary wake up call for the travellers who replied 3 minutes later with good support play enabling a well worked try by C. Buckley.
Vectis went on to score a further 3 tries in the first half, another for C. Buckley and two for T. Crews; all converted courtesy of J. Nelsons boot. The home team managed another score to remain in touch with the half time score 26 -12.
At the start of the second half, Portsmouth opened the scoring with an unconverted try bringing the score to 26 - 17. This again provided Vectis with the necessary incentive and they went on to score five unanswered tries, two for H. Jolliffe, one for G. Finan one for M. Henley and one further try for T. Crews, who finished off his day with a hat-trick. J. Nelson converted all bar one and the final whistle saw the visitors come away with a comfortable 59 - 17 score.
Honourable mentions were given to J. Nelson for his outstanding work with the boot, T. Crews for his hat-trick and support play, P. Kearney for support at the rucks and superb passing, L. Gough for general work rate. Man of the match was awarded to vice captain, J. Coghlan for a superb all round performance.
Coaches Ollie and Tom Kearney said that it was a good performance with some areas still to work on, however it remains the best start to a season for this team to date. (P4 W3)
