Big away win for powerful Vectis
On a boggy pitch in Lewes Vectis put in a strong performance that ultimately overwhelmed a brave Lewes side. It was clear from the beginning that the Vectis forwards had the edge on their opponents with Thor and Ryan putting in very strong running performances, ably supported by the rest of the pack. Despite having most of the possession and territory however only one try was scored in the first half with Sam Thomas taking several Lewes players over the line with him. Too often Vectis gave away silly penalties, frequently with repeat offences, and this stopped them scoring more tries in the first half. Against stronger sides with a good kicker this could prove costly. The backs struggled in the first half to establish any rhythm but strong individual runs kept Lewes busy.
In the second half the work that had been put in by the forwards paid dividends as Lewes visibly tired and slipped off tackles. Olly Fry got the second half scoring underway with a drive from a yard out. Tries then followed at regular intervals for Fu, Taylor 2, Sanchez and Branagh 2. 5 of the tries were converted by Taylor, who had one kick disallowed for taking more than a minute to kick it! Thor was very unlucky having run 50 yards he lost the ball on the line!
To their credit Lewes did not give up and scored an unconverted try in almost the last minute of the game. This was a good run out for the team who have another game against US Portsmouth before travelling to Winchester in the Plate semi-finals. Well done to Will Ridley on his starting debut. Commiserations to Billy who managed to give himself a nose bleed with his own knee!
