Tough day at the office for Vectis
Today's opponents have not lost a match for three years and had only conceded one try this season. Vectis were unbeaten this season and one of the teams today was going to leave empty handed.
The visitors were a very well drilled side with outstanding players in most positions but in the first of three twenty minute periods Vectis gave as good as they got. An early try for Haywards Heath was met with two tries for Rory Taylor, and much to their surprise the visitors found themselves behind at the first break.
In the second third Vectis fell behind to several scores made by well controlled play and ball retention which left the home side short of defenders at the end of several phases. Haywards Heath also made very good use of the short side repeatedly bringing big runners on to the ball at speed. Strong tackling from the whole of the home team made sure that the tries scored throughout this period were earned through hard work, and there were no gifts. Several bullocking runs from Thor and good running from the backs kept the Haywards heath defence busy but decisive breakthroughs were hard to come by. Jesse Butchers managed to score from a typical break in one of Vectis's rare forays out of their own half..
In the final third, despite injuries to several players, Vectis called on all their reserves of energy and fortitude and kept Haywards Heath out for most of the time, restricting them to a couple of tries. Man of the match Sam Thomas, Lewis, Thor and Freddie tackled themselves to a standstill to keep Vectis in the game, whilst the backs dealt well with threatening runs. Both sides played themselves into the ground in this period of the game and the final whistle was something of a relief!
Whilst the score line looks one sided this was a very tough match for both sides, and the visitor's coaches were full of praise for the effort and skill shown by the Vectis players, and they should all be proud of themselves as individuals and as a team who have progressed a long way this season. The team now have two weeks training to prepare for another tough game, away to Alton.
