Vectis through to next round of Hampshire Cup
In a fast paced skillful match played in the right spirit that was a credit to both teams, Vectis did enough to ensure that they progressed to the next round of the Hampshire Cup, surviving a late Portsmouth revival to come through 35-25 winners.
On a perfect day for running rugby the game started at a furious pace with both sides looking for dominance up front and trying to release their backs in space. The scoring was opened by Jesse Butchers for Vectis, followed by thrusting runs by Finn Mahoney on the right wing, who was stopped only by desperate tackling. Portsmouth scored to equalise from a breakaway using the outstanding pace of their winger.
The game was evenly fought up to half time with further tries from Rory Taylor and Jesse Butchers building a healthy lead. The second half started with further tries from Vectis, all scored by Jesse and Rory, to extend the lead. A break for an injury enabled Portsmouth to draw breath and pull together. They started to narrow the lead as their huge front row began to dominate the scrums and get their side going forward. Strong defensive work by all of the Vectis forwards ensured that they stayed in the game however and when the whistle blew for full time Vectis remained 2 scores ahead.
This was a very good win for the team against strong opposition, and there were significant performances from every player on the pitch. The team can look forward to the next round with confidence.
Tries were scored by Rory Taylor (4) and Jesse Butchers (3). Portsmouth voted Jesse Butchers the man of the match.
