Big loss in semi final
Having not had a competitive match for a couple of weeks Vectis received a rude awakening in the Hampshire plate semi-final against Romsey. The final score line did not flatter the visitors to Ventnor as they gave the home side a lesson in basic power rugby. An early score from Romsey settled them down and they quickly took control of the game. They were first to every breakdown and were too physical for the Vectis forwards, securing their own ball with ease and frequently stealing Vectis ball. Even when Vectis did secure ball the team were going backwards which made it very difficult for the backs to get away from their opponents.
Romsey had a big strong backline who passed well into space and scored at frequent intervals. As Vectis tired tackles were missed and at the end Romsey had scored 13 tries. Consolation efforts from Finn and Rory made little impact on the game. In the forwards Sam Thomas put in a strong effort throughout and was awarded man of the match by Romsey.
This was a disappointing result but if the lesson handed out by Romsey is learnt then the team will be better equipped to play a more physical brand of rugby. They will now contest the plate 3/4 play off so there is still something to play for.
